# Pick Pack and Ship Process: 8 Steps and Where Errors Start

The pick pack and ship process is the path an order takes from your store to the carrier: someone pulls the items from their bins (pick), checks them into a box with the right packaging (pack), and buys and prints a label so tracking goes back to the customer (ship). In a small warehouse that's three steps. In practice it's about eight, and each handoff between them is where a wrong item or a late order gets in.

We make SKUSavvy, a warehouse management system for Shopify sellers, so this guide is written from the floor we know. If you want the product tour rather than the process, [SKUSavvy's pick pack and ship features](/pick-pack-ship-software) are on their own page. Here we walk the steps, then show where mistakes actually start.

## What Pick Pack and Ship Means

Pick pack and ship is the part of order fulfillment that happens inside the four walls. Receiving and put-away come before it; delivery and returns come after. Every ecommerce warehouse runs some version of it, whether that's one person with a phone or a team working batches on carts.

| Stage | The job | Done when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Pick** | Pull each unit from the right bin | Every line on the order is in hand, in the right quantity |
| **Pack** | Check each unit against the order and choose the packaging | The box is closed with the right items and the right weight |
| **Ship** | Buy the label, print it, hand off to the carrier | Tracking is on the order and the customer has been notified |

## The Pick Pack and Ship Process in 8 Steps

Here's the full process the way it runs on a Shopify warehouse floor. Steps 1 and 2 happen before anyone walks to a shelf.

1. Order arrives. The order lands in your store and syncs to the system that knows where stock sits.
2. Batch the orders. Group orders that share products so one walk covers many orders.
3. Route the pick. Sort the bins into one path through the warehouse, so nobody doubles back.
4. Pick. Go to each bin, take the quantity shown, and confirm it (by tap, or by scanning the bin and the item).
5. Sort. Drop each unit into the tote or spot for its order, so orders don't mix on the cart.
6. Pack. Scan each item against the order, pick the box, and set the weight.
7. Label. Compare rates, buy the label, and print it with the packing slip.
8. Hand off and update. The parcel goes to the carrier, and tracking goes back to the store order.

### Single Orders vs Batches

A single order is fine when you ship a handful a day. Once you're walking to the same bin three times before lunch, batch them. SKUSavvy groups orders with like products into batches, and each batch gets a pick path planned by a routing algorithm on your warehouse layout, shown on the warehouse map so the picker can follow it.

### Sorting on the Cart

Batching saves walking but adds one risk: units for different orders end up mixed. Pick to tote fixes that by giving each order its own tote on the cart. You scan the product, then the tote, and the system counts what's in each. Our [pick to tote walkthrough](/pick-to-tote) shows the flow.

## Where Errors Actually Start

Most guides list common mistakes. What they skip is that the error nearly always starts one step before anyone notices it. A wrong item found at the pack bench was usually pulled from the wrong bin, or put away in the wrong bin days earlier.

| What goes wrong | Where it starts | The check that catches it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Wrong variant in the box** | Pick: two lookalike items in neighbouring bins | Scan the item at pick and again at pack |
| **Item not where the system says** | Put-away: stock dropped in the wrong bin | Confirm the bin at put-away and at pick, with a bin scan where you use one |
| **Short shipment** | Pick: last unit in the bin, nobody flagged it | Pick screen shows the bin quantity before the walk |
| **Orders mixed on the cart** | Sort: units dropped in the wrong tote | Scan the tote when each unit goes in |
| **Box too big, postage too high** | Pack: packer guesses the size | Suggested packaging, when items have dimensions and packaging is set up |
| **Order edited after picking** | Store: customer changes the order mid-flow | Edits show on the order and the batch until the label is bought; unpick anything no longer needed |

The pattern: the cheapest place to catch a mistake is the step where it happens. That's why scan checks matter more at pick than at pack. In SKUSavvy you choose which scans are required, from bin and item scans at pick to a scan for every unit packed at the bench, so the checks fit your floor instead of slowing every order.

## Packing: The Last Chance to Catch It

When the picked items reach the bench, the packer opens the order and scans or taps each item into the shipment. SKUSavvy suggests the package size when the warehouse has packaging set up and your products have dimensions, and you can add more boxes when an order doesn't fit in one.

![SKUSavvy pack screen on a phone with items waiting to be packed](https://res.cloudinary.com/deoyetsee/image/upload/v1793030716/6c0ef4d754db1a2523f3333ec52e6dc2.png)

The box suggestion starts with the packaging you used last time for the same contents, if it's in stock. Otherwise it picks the best fit from the packaging on hand. The details are in [packing that picks the box](/blog/packing-that-picks-the-box-and-costs-you-can-trust).

## Shipping Without Retyping

Once everything is packed, the available carrier services show for that package. Buy the label, print it with the packing slip, and tracking goes back to Shopify. Turn on automatic printing and the label prints as soon as it's bought.

Need to send part of an order now and the rest later? Split it into more than one shipment. Shipping it outside SKUSavvy? With manual fulfillment turned on in your company settings, mark it fulfilled and add the outside tracking number, and that updates back to Shopify too.

## Features and Benefits

| Feature | What it does on the floor |
| --- | --- |
| **Batching with a visual pick route** | Groups orders with like products and draws one path through your warehouse map |
| **Pick to tote** | One tote per order on the cart, scan the product then the tote, pack tote by tote |
| **Configurable scan points** | Require bin, item and pack scans only where your floor needs them |
| **Suggested packaging** | Proposes the box from item dimensions and the packaging you stock |
| **Multi-box and split shipments** | Ship one order in several boxes, or in parts, without leaving the pack screen |
| **Labels and packing slips in one flow** | Compare rates, buy and print without retyping weights or addresses |
| **Kept in sync with your Shopify store** | Order edits reach the warehouse until the label is made, and tracking goes back |
| **Phones, tablets and scanners** | Runs in the browser; use the camera, or any Bluetooth or USB scanner |

### Using Savvy Bot With Fulfillment

Savvy Bot is the AI assistant inside SKUSavvy. During fulfillment it's most useful as a guide and a report runner: ask how to turn on scan points for a batch, or ask it to pull a report on recent shipments from your own data. It reads and explains. It doesn't change anything unless you turn on edits and approve each one, and it uses AI credits.

The walking, the scanning and the tape stay human work. The software's job is to make the wrong item hard to ship.

## How Pick Pack and Ship Fits the Rest of Fulfillment

Ask five people for the steps of order fulfillment and you'll get five lists. A common seven-step version is: receive, put away, store, pick, pack, ship, and handle returns. Pick pack and ship is the middle of that list, and it only runs clean if receiving and put-away did their job first.

Receiving itself usually breaks into five steps: check the delivery against the purchase order, count and inspect, label anything that needs it, record the stock, and put it away into a bin. If stock goes into the wrong bin at put-away, you'll meet that mistake again at pick, which is why many warehouses confirm the bin, often with a quick scan, when they put stock away.

## Pick Pack and Ship Process FAQ

### What Does Pick Pack and Ship Mean?

It's the in-warehouse part of order fulfillment: pull the items for an order from their bins, check them into a box with the right packaging, then buy a label and hand the parcel to the carrier.

### What Are the 7 Steps of Order Fulfillment?

A common version is receive, put away, store, pick, pack, ship and returns. Lists vary, but pick, pack and ship always sit in the middle.

### What Are the 5 Steps in the Receiving Process?

Check the delivery against the purchase order, count and inspect it, label what needs labels, record the stock, and put it away into a bin.

### What Are the Stages of the Shipping Process?

Inside the warehouse: pack, weigh, choose a carrier service, buy and print the label, and hand off. After that the carrier moves it to delivery, and tracking keeps the customer informed.

### Do I Need Barcode Scanners for Pick Pack and Ship?

Not to start. SKUSavvy can scan with a phone or tablet camera, or you can tap to confirm. A Bluetooth or USB scanner is faster when someone picks all day.

### How Do I Stop Picking Errors?

Catch them where they start: scan the bin and the item at pick, scan the tote when sorting, and scan again at pack.
